ACL Spotlight: Mugison

Mugison (or Örn Elías Guðmundsson) is a huge star in his native Iceland. In 2004 at the Icelandic Music Awards, his album, Mugimama Is This Monkey Music?, was named best album, while his song "Murr Murr" took home best song honors.

When Mugison first started playing, it was just himself with a guitar and a computer, but more recently he's recruited a band to join him onstage. Many have described him as the Icelandic Beck. He recently played the Roskilde Festival in Iceland with Björk and Sigur Rós.

His third album, Mugiboogie, will be released this upcoming Tuesday (8/19). Here's what some are saying about it...

There’s a definite link between Mugiboogie’s ADD cycling through disparate styles and Stereopathetic Soul Manure and Mellow Gold-era Beck.
- Drowned In Sound

Mugison has often been stamped as the Icelandic Beck, but on his fourth album, he edges onto John Lennon's turf. The irreverent electro rocker, no stranger to smirking puns and helter-skelter noise, marks a straighter course with Mugiboogie's ramshackle rock and Plastic Ono Band snarls.

Whilst he has the gift of classic songwriting, he has an alter-schizophrenic side that breeds songs like ‘I’m Alright’ and ‘The Animal’, which blur the line between comedic and tragic, the lines that Ween so often cross. He can be sweet, sensual and loving, and simultaneously monstrous and venomous.
