8201 Interview - Saturna
In my never ending mission to introduce new music to the masses I bring you the 1st of many interviews coming up in 2007. I hope you will find out about some new bands before all the so called hype. And as a side note, thanks to all the returning visitors for being patient over the last few months. The content will be never ending from here on out.
First up is Saturna, based out of Portland, Oregon. Made up of Ryan Carroll, Eric Block, and SteveAnderson the band has recently released their debut E.P “…All Night” and are currently working on the first full length release. At first listen you can make comparisons to B.R.M.C and of course feel that Portland sound. Neither of which is a negative. Something about that music scene inspires a certain style that I am instantly drawn to and I love B.R.M.C. They are in good company working with Tony Lash [Stars of Track and Field, The Dandy Warhols, The Upsidedown] and Brin Addison [ Blur, Supergrass, Dove, and Smashing Pumpkins] both of which are mixing the new album, expect it in April. I was recently introduced to the band and was fortunate enough to get a few questions in.
How did you come up with the name Saturna?
Well, its kind of a funny story actually, because we found out later that Saturna is an island in the NW, but I guess Steve was traveling around Spain and had a crazy encounter with a Spanish stripper named Saturna, her gangster boyfriend and a stolen yacht. But, I guess that's all I can say if I don't want to end up with cement shoes.
What are you currently listening to?

Mew - And the Glass Handed Kite
Serena Maneesh - Serena Maneesh
Silversun Pickups - Carnavas
Stereophonics - Language. Sex. Violence. Other?
How does your environment influence your music? What is the music scene like there?
Its kind of fun for us, because everyone lives in Seattle except for me, so we get to straddle two scenes. Portland is having this rennaisance of amazing music thats talked about all over the world and Seattle has so much good music that's not being talked about. One of our favorite bands from Seattle are Hypatia Lake. They put out one of the best undercovered records of the 2006 and deserve a lot more attention. I think our environment definitely affects us, but we are the type of people that get out there and travel around as much as possible, so we're just as influenced by the amazingly beautiful things out there in the world that we find.
What are your goals or plans for 2007? When can we expect a show in Austin?
Well, the biggest thing is going to be our record. We haven't titled it yet, but its going to be so amazing. I can't wait to play it live. We're planning on crashing SXSW and playing a couple of parties, hitting the west coast before that and then a full tour for late spring/early summer.
Add us on myspace and we'll post a bulletin as soon as can give you details. I was in Austin last May and checked out the clubs. There's definitely a good thing going on there and we would have a lot of fun there if we lived there.
