The Voidz have been a sort of sanctuary for Julian Casablancas over the last few years. A place for him to indulge his experimental side and possibly have a little less diplomacy than he has to when he is performing with The Strokes. I can only assume it's nice to hide from the pressures of being a headliner from time to time and what better way to do that then opening for Phoenix on back to back sold out nights at Stubb's just in time for Austin City Limits.
The Voidz set began with the track “Leave It In My Dreams,” which set the tone for how the rest of the show would be: a huge blistering mix of guitars and synthesizers. The band may not be as "tight as The Strokes, but that is the point. It's a little rawer and in that sense embodies the spirit of rock and roll. Casablancas’ is as true to form as he has ever been in the 18+ years he has been a frontman. Still elusive, hiding behind sunglasses at night and a hazy cloud of smoke and dark lighting, but that's how we want him to be. In a culture of social media that gives us 24 hours a day access to our favorite musicians it's nice to have the mystery that The Voidz are doing something cool that most of us will never understand.
This tour and the most recent release, Virtue, have the band at a crossroads no longer just being a backing band to Julian Casablancas but by dropping the moniker of "Julian Casablancas and The Voidz" and just going by The Voidz. It shows a leap of faith by Casablancas and commitment to everyone else on stage, and during several points, you could see just how cohesive the band had become and got a sense of a group enjoying themselves. While the set was short The Voidz still managed to enthusiastically power through "QYURRYUS", "Black Hole" and M.utually A.ssured D.estruction" before closing things out with "Human Sadness" and if he has carried on one trait from his time with The Strokes it's that when the show is done it's done and the impact of the show speaks for itself. No need for an encore, it leaves them wanting more.
